Using Your Key Fob To Its Full Potential

Are you using your key fob to its full potential?  Here are some tips and tricks from the Key Programming Technicians at Quick Keys, LLC in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota.

Most drivers in The Twin Cities use their fobs dozens of times a day, but they only ever touch two buttons.

Modern key fobs are essentially miniature computers. Beyond just “Lock” and “Unlock,” these gadgets often hide “secret” features designed for convenience and safety. Here are the top tips and tricks from the programming technicians at Quick Keys, LLC.

1) The "Summer Vent" Trick (Roll Down Windows)

Minnesota summers can be brutal, and there is nothing worse than stepping into a car that’s been baking in the sun. Many vehicles (especially Honda, Toyota, Ford, and BMW) have a hidden shortcut to air out your car before you even touch the door handle.

  • How to try it: Press the Unlock button once, then press it a second time and hold it down.
  • The Result: On many models, this will automatically roll down all your windows and even open the sunroof!

2) Folding Your Side Mirrors

Tired of worrying about your mirrors getting clipped in a tight parking lot? If you drive a newer truck (like a Silverado or Sierra) or a luxury SUV, your fob might be able to tuck those mirrors in for you.

  • How to try it: Press and hold the Lock button for 1–2 seconds.
  • The Result: Many power-folding mirrors will retract automatically, keeping them safe from passing traffic.

3) Memory Settings Linked to Your Fob

Does your spouse or teenager drive your car? Tired of getting in and having your knees hit the dashboard? High-end vehicles can have fobs that can be programmed to specific Driver Profiles.

  • The Pro Tip: At Quick Keys, LLC, we can help you link specific fobs to your car’s memory system. When you unlock the car with your fob, the seat, mirrors, and even radio presets automatically adjust to your preferences before you sit down.

4) A Home Security Secret

Did you know your key fob can act as a home-theft deterrent? Many people leave their keys in the kitchen or on a nightstand. If you hear a strange noise outside your house at night, that Panic Button is your best friend.

  • Why it works: Setting off your car alarm from inside your house is a loud, effective way to scare off a potential prowler and alert your neighbors that something is wrong.

5) The "Secret" Mechanical Key

If your fob battery dies, you aren’t stranded! Almost every “Smart Key” or “Push-to-Start” fob has a physical metal key hidden inside the plastic housing.

  • How to find it: Look for a small sliding latch or a release button on the side or back of the fob. Pulling this will reveal a mechanical key that can manually unlock your driver’s door.
  • Pro Tip: If your car has a push-button start and a dead fob battery, try holding the fob directly against the Start button while you press it—most cars have an emergency backup sensor (Sometimes in the cupholder or center console) for exactly this situation!  If you don’t know where this is, look in your owner’s manual.

Question:  How do I know if I have these features?

Answer:  At Quick Keys we always recommend our customers to become familiar with their Owner’s Manual.  If you do not have an owners manual, Google often has links to PDF versions of your exact vehicle.

Question: If I do not have these functions, can you add them?

Answer: No, if your vehicle does not come equipped with these functions we cannot add them.  Go to your local dealer or aftermarket shop for inquiries

Question: When I start my vehicle it says “Driver 3” and I only have 2 key fobs, can you change this?

Answer: Typically Yes.  This usually means there was a key added to your vehicle.  We can delete out all your keys and program them back in so you can have specific driver settings.  Please talk to us about the risks of deleting out all keys and see if this is something you would be willing to do

Question:  There’s no key on the outside of my vehicle

Answer:  Over 99% of the vehicle on the road today have a lock cylinder on the outside of the vehicle, typically located on the driver’s side door.  Some vehicles like the Mustang Mach-E do not have a door lock.  Please call us if you need help locating your door lock

Question:  I don’t have the key to my door, can you make a new one?

Answer:  Yes!  We can pick and decode your locks to make you a new one that is matched to the factory specs of your vehicle.
